Metropolitan Opera House Backstage Tour
The tour is schedule for Sunday,
April 15 at 10 am and is FULLY BOOKED!Unfortunately, we had to cut some applicants by random lottery. Everyone has been notified by email

filling any unclaimed spots.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Reminder - Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, March 20 (afternoon) and Wednesday, March 21 (evening).
Conferences will be held Tuesday from 12:30-2:30 pm and on Wednesday from 5-7:30 pm. There will be a half day for students
on Tuesday, March 20. Students will be dismissed at noon. Please check with your child’s teacher if you haven’t
signed up or need more information.
Please be mindful that young children require supervision and appropriate plans should be made to accommodate. It is
unsafe to have small children unsupervised in school. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Please join us for a Parent Workshop on word study/spelling. We have the unique opportunity to host two experts in this
field, Regina and David Smith. You will have a chance to gain further insight into their approach to word study/spelling
and engage in a question and answer session.

The Nominating Committee is seeking nominations for parents to serve on next year’s Parents Association Executive
Board. This is a wonderful opportunity to get more involved in your child’s education and make a difference in

P.A. general meetings and chair a committee or an event.

The Second Grade will begin their NIA dance classon

Parent Volunteers Needed for Two Arts Committees:
Metropolitan Opera Grant Committee (Parents As Arts Partners/Center for Arts Education) - We set up the partnership with The
Met and got the grant – now we need help making it a success for our school! Laura Mitgang is forming a committee of
parents and teachers who want to help organize and market the six special events coming up this spring. Please contact her

PS 158 Arts Committee – We are forming an Arts Committee of parents and teachers to research arts opportunities for
PS 158. Goal: to set up a special arts enrichment program for each grade for next year – class trips, partnerships
with museums, concert halls, dance companies, theaters, puppeteers, storytellers, etc. Initial brainstorming meeting; formulation
of list of arts organizations, grants and ideas to explore; division of research and tasks; report-back meeting to cull our
findings; presentation to Darryl Alhadeff (who is already supportive but needs our manpower!). Bring your creativity and

New semester starts on January 22. Please come and enroll your children. The following classes are full/closed: Chess
(Tuesday), Sportsmania (Tuesday), Choice Time (Wednesday), Cooking it up (Thursday) and Robotics (Friday), Sports (Monday
and Tuesday).
Change in program - "Fun with Math" - New teacher Andrew Levine will be teaching K-3rd grade fun math games
that allow them to deepen their mathematical skills through everyday life. The class will create a mathematically rich environment
through games and activities.
Kids in the Game - Recess
A pump for balls is needed to keep the sports equipment in shape (soccer/ball pump).

Winter Concert
Mr. Cohen can’t thank the 5th grade band, the solo performances, the parent chorus and
the parent band enough for such an amazing performance on December 20th.
We would like to thank Mr. Cohen for his continuous work in making our children so musical.

Mr. Cohen and his musicians are working hard preparing for the Holiday Concert on Wednesday, December 20 at 7 pm.
Tickets are $5 and can be purchased in advance at the PA Office. Refreshments will be available to purchase during intermission.
Everyone over the age of 13 must purchase a ticket.

Winter Concert!
THE P.S 158 WINTER CONCERT WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 20 AT 7 PM.
The concert will include band and choral performances including parents and teachers.
Tickets are $5 (children under 13 free) and are available now in the PA Office. Refreshments will be served during intermission.

The Holiday Fair will take place on Monday, December 11 from 2:30 pm to 8 pm. Please spread the word to your friends
and neighbors. The event is free and a great opportunity to purchase holiday gifts at terrific prices while benefiting our

New Passport Requirements & Express Service
New requirements have been issued by the Departments of State and Homeland Security. As of January 23, 2007, passports
will be required for all U.S. citizens traveling to or from the United States via air, to or from Canada, Mexico, Central
and South America, the Caribbean (with the exception of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), and Bermuda. As of June
1, 2009, passports will be required for all U.S. citizens traveling to or from the United States via land and sea, as well
as air, regardless of destination. This applies for children and adults.
The Jamaica Tourist Board with the help of the US Postal Service will help you apply for a passport at the HOLIDAY FAIR.
Passport Photos will be taken as well for a $15 fee. No credit cards.
In order to take advantage of this service, you will be required to provide this following:
· Proof of US - previous US Passport, birth certificate with a registrants’ raised seal, naturalization
certificate, certificate of citizenship, current valid license, government ID or military ID
· 2 Passport Photos
· Fees - 97$ per adult and $82 per child

There is something for everyone! The book fair will be open from 8:15 am to 3:15 pm Monday through Thursday. The Book
Fair will be open during the November 16 Open PA Meeting and Parent Teacher Conference’s on Mon and Wed. Please
remember that the book fair is also a great opportunity to help build our classroom libraries by purchasing books and donating
them to your child’s classroom. Thank you, Terri Kravitz, Libby Jordan, and all the volunteers for coordinating
this great fundraiser (also a big thanks to Naomi Cruz for great decorations and Grandma Rose for all her continuous help).

to be have Russell Schneider and Eric Kollin joining us to discuss ‘How Technology is helping your children at P.S.
158’. We will also have the Sylvan Learning Center join us to provide some interesting information on ‘Study
Habits for your children’. At this meeting, we will hold the raffle drawing for a free semester of Club 158 for

Still time left for vendors to register for Holiday Fair 2006! Our list of vendors is growing, but there is still room
if you would like to participate in our Holiday Fair scheduled for Monday December 11.
Vendors may be from outside our school community, and the event itself will be open to the whole community (P.S. 158 and
beyond!) Even if you do not have a tangible product to sell, taking a table at the fair is an excellent way to introduce
yourself, business or service to a new clientele! Of course - the fair is a great way to raise funds for our school and have
some fun too. Registration forms are in the PA office.
Candy and Gift Wrap Orders are Coming!
Please remember to come to pick up your candy and gift wrap orders next Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday (November 20-22).
They will be available for pick up from 8:30 to 9:30 each morning and 2:30 -3:30 pm each afternoon. If possible, please
bring the pink copy of your order form to expedite pick up. We also need volunteers to assist in distributing orders. If

Week!
The annual book fair will be held
on November 10 – 16.
This is great opportunity to purchase books for your children, family members and friends. Books make wonderful gifts

This is the school's BIGGEST fundraiser – last year we made $80,000 - this is a wonderful opportunity to participate

Manhattan Chamber of Commerce Raffles
The deadline for submission of raffles is Friday, November 17. 100% of the proceeds go to our school. An ice cream
party will be awarded to the top selling class in both the lower and upper grades! Ice cream party leader for K-2 grade is

What a group of great kids from PS 158! You did amazing!! Thank you Dainty Clarke, Reine Vilim and Mary Lish for organizing
this great charity run for PS 158.
PS 158 Chess Tournament
Thank you to Reine Vilim for helping with the tournament and Roman Krant for teaching them chess. There were so many
fabulous participants this year both. The winners are:

The annual book fair will be held on November 10 – 16. This year it will be held in two rooms: one for the
younger children and the other for the older children. Thursday, November 9 is preview day for teachers.

There is still time to register for the P.S. 158 Chess Tournament which will be held on Sunday, November 5. This is a
great tournament for beginners. Pick up your form up at the PA Office.
Parent/Teacher Conferences Coming Up!
Parent teacher conferences will be held on Monday, November 13 (afternoon) and Wednesday, November 16 (evening). This
is a great opportunity to meet with you child’s teacher to discuss how he/she is progressing in school. Be sure
to return your parent/teacher conference request form!
Open School Week
Open School Week will be observed from Monday, November 13 until Friday, November 17. Look for the schedule for classroom
visits in your child’s backpack.

We are pleased to report that Ms. Darryl Alhadeff’s hip surgery went well and she is already up and walking

Ronald McDonald Charity Run!

Our school is an active participant in this wonderful event that benefits Ronald McDonald House. Kids ages 4-17 are invited
to participate. The run will take place in Central Park on Saturday, November 4 starting at 12:45 pm. Registration fee is

participate. This will be a great way to raise funds for our school and do some fun holiday shopping! The event takes place

Octoberfest Update:
1. Advance Ticket Sales!
Avoid the lines – buy your tickets in advance! Most games and activities at Oktoberfest cost 1 to 2 tickets
(some are more). This year you can purchase tickets in advance for 50 cents each at the PA Office (books of $5,$10,$20).
2. Supplies are Needed!
Please bring donations to the PA Office by Friday, October 27. Check the list below for contributions for each grade.
Pre-K and K: Plain (unfrosted) cupcakes
1st Grade: Frosting and cupcake decorations (sprinkles, candy corns, M&Ms. etc.)
2nd Grade: Regular soda cans
3rd Grade: Juice boxes and other non-carbonated drinks
4th Grade: Single-serving water bottles
5th Grade: Diet soda cans
We also need cakes for our Cake Walk (a lot like musical chairs)!! We don’t want to disappoint the children by
running out of these items.
3. Bake-Off
We would love to taste your family secret recipes. Enter your home baked cookies, pies, confections and other goods.
Prizes will be awarded to outstanding entries based on taste, presentation and originality.
4. Lego Contest
Create your unique art work no larger than 12X12 to be displayed at Oktoberfest. Prizes will be based on presentation
and originality.
5. Haunting for Volunteers!

Ronald McDonald Charity Run!
The Kid’s Charity Fun Run has been a successful and well-organized fundraiser in support of the New York City
Ronald McDonald House, held annually since 1999. The Fun Run enables kids to feel confident about helping other kids while
participating in an event which is fun for everyone.
All proceeds will benefit the children who stay at the Ronald McDonald House while receiving cancer treatment.
Our school is an active participant in this wonderful event. Kids ages 4-17 are invited to participate. The run will

Drama Club Underway!
Drama Club started with a great turnout! The group we are working with this year is ‘Working Actor for Hire’
and they have a real love for teaching and performing. The fee is $700 for students in grades 3 through 5 for the entire
school year culminating with performances in June. If you need a registration form – please call or stop by the
PA Office.
