Next Open PA Meeting
Our next Open PA meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 19th at   Mary Silver from the Community Education Council (CEC) will explain how the Chancellor’s new regulations will affect District 2.  We will also hear an update from the Nominating Committee regarding next Years Executive Board, to be elected and appointed in our May PA meeting.  Please come and show your support.

Forms will be sent home on Monday.  For those of you not able to attend the benefit you can look at our Auction Booklet on www.PS158.org to see all the amazing donations.

Volunteers
We really need your help to make this a terrific event.  Volunteer forms were sent home in your child’s backpack.  You can donate only one hour of time and enjoy the rest of the event.  You can also find on www.ps158.org

Please sell your raffles (you can be your own best customer!).  These are wonderful prizes!

Blackboard Awards
A parent wrote in to notify us about the Blackboard Awards.  The Blackboard Awards were created in 2002 by Manhattan Media, owners of Our Town, the West Side Spirit and Our Town Downtown newspapers, and New York Family and Avenue magazines.  The goal is to highlight notable achievements by schools across all of New York's educational systems. The Blackboard Awards program has met with an excellent response from schools, readers and the New York Press Association.  Parents may be interested in nominating our school or their child’s teacher.  The Blackboard Awards are sponsored by Our Town, and the deadline is April 27. 5th Grade Camp Mariah Trip Meeting
There will be two information meetings on Thursday, April 19 in the evening and Friday, April 20 in the morning.  Choose which one fits better for your schedule – more info. In your child’s backpack.

We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and Spring break! 

 

Lice Check

Spring Break means checking for lice!  We urge parents to please check your child's hair and scalp for lice and nits.  This will help prevent an outbreak at school!   Reminder, on Friday, April 13, class parents will make sure all the classes are checked.  This is how we continue to stay a lice free school.

 

Next Open PA Meeting

Our next Open PA meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 18 at 8:45 a.m.  At this meeting, we will have the following speakers:

  1. Teachers from PS 158 will describe how important Teacher College Teachers is for PS 158.
  2. Mary Silver from the Community Education Council will give us a better insight on how the changes Chancellor Klein is implementing will affect District 2

     

    Also, hear an update from our Nominating Committee regarding next year's Executive Board, to be elected at our May meeting.  Please come and show your support!

    Lenn Uchima and Peter Wei won the chess tournament at PS 6.

    Metropolitan Opera House Backstage Tour

    The tour is schedule for Sunday, April 15 at 10 am and is FULLY BOOKED!  Unfortunately, we had to cut some applicants by random lottery.  Everyone has been notified by email (or phone, if no email address listed).  We’re collecting RSVPs to ferncare@aol.com by this Wednesday evening, April 11 and filling any unclaimed spots.

     

    Those who applied and could not be offered a place on this tour will receive priority registration for one of the two in-school workshops of their choosing.  Watch backpacks for next round of sign-up forms.

     

    Anyone interested in taking a public backstage tour of the Met can catch the remaining ones this spring on May 9, 10 or 11 at 3:30 pm.  Call the Met Opera Guild for details:  212-769-7020.

    Parent-Teacher Conferences

    Reminder - Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, March 20 (afternoon) and Wednesday, March 21 (evening). Conferences will be held Tuesday from 12:30-2:30 pm and on Wednesday from 5-7:30 pm. There will be a half day for students on Tuesday, March 20. Students will be dismissed at noon. Please check with your child’s teacher if you haven’t signed up or need more information.

    Please be mindful that young children require supervision and appropriate plans should be made to accommodate. It is unsafe to have small children unsupervised in school. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

    Parent Workshops

    Please join us for a Parent Workshop on word study/spelling. We have the unique opportunity to host two experts in this field, Regina and David Smith. You will have a chance to gain further insight into their approach to word study/spelling and engage in a question and answer session.

    Executive Board Positions Available

    The Nominating Committee is seeking nominations for parents to serve on next year’s Parents Association Executive Board. This is a wonderful opportunity to get more involved in your child’s education and make a difference in your school experience. Executive Board members must attend a monthly P.A. Executive Board meeting, as well as the monthly P.A. general meetings and chair a committee or an event.

    If you are interested, please complete an application by the end of March. Please step forward and become a member of the team.

    Ways That You Can Help:

            Download necessary forms/letters from our school website, www.ps158.org, and give them to friends and family members and ask them to help find new sources of donations.

     

    Please bring in your donations - our volunteers spend tireless hours inputting all the information - so the sooner they have your forms the easier it will be to make the auction booklet. The donations are coming in so be prepared for some GREAT silent and live auction lots!!!! Keep bringing those donations in! THANK YOU!!!!!

     

           Help secure items for both the auction and raffles. Consider tapping any contacts you may have in the Travel Industry, Entertainment Business, Restaurants, Stores, Spas, etc.

           Reminder that class baskets for the raffle are due.

     

    Open PA Meeting

    Our next Open PA meeting will be on Thursday, March 18 at 7:30 pm. Our guest speaker, Dr. William Reisacher, will inform us all about allergies, ear infections and conduct a question and answer session.

    Apparel – every Friday

    Judy Wise will be selling PS 158 apparel every Friday at pick up in the large cafeteria. Sweatshirts, long sleeve t-shirts, caps and bags……..

     

    NIA DANCE

    The Second Grade will begin their NIA dance class on March 12th. NIA teaches the children a style of dance to express themselves through free dance movements. Ms. Caroline will be their teacher. Your child will tell you more next week.

    Friday, April 20, 2007
    The Spring Auction is our biggest fundraiser of the year! We cannot do it without YOUR help. The Spring Benefit raised $80,000 last year. All of the proceeds from the auction support our children’s continued enrichment.

    Ways That You Can Help:

    · Download necessary forms/letters from our school website, www.ps158.org, and give them to friends and family members and ask them to help find new sources of donations. Consider tapping any contacts you may have in the Travel Industry, Entertainment Business, Restaurants, Stores, Spas, etc.
    · Sales of raffles for our Grade baskets begin in 2 weeks! Nano Ipod, Art supplies, Romantic Getaway in New York, Rainy Day Basket, Digital Camera and Printer….

    Our next Open PA meeting will be on Thursday, March 15 at 7:30 pm. Our guest speaker, Dr. William Reisacher will speak about "Allergies and Childhood Illnesses."

    A fascinating peek behind the curtain at the inner workings of the opera house: stage, costumes, sets, lights, orchestra pit, prompter’s box, and more!
    We will send home sign up forms in your children’s backpacks soon. Also watch this space for more Metropolitan Opera workshops and events coming this spring!

    Parent Volunteers Needed for Two Arts Committees:
    Metropolitan Opera Grant Committee (Parents As Arts Partners/Center for Arts Education) - We set up the partnership with The Met and got the grant – now we need help making it a success for our school! Laura Mitgang is forming a committee of parents and teachers who want to help organize and market the six special events coming up this spring. Please contact her if you are interested in being part of the fun! laura@mitgang.com

    PS 158 Arts Committee – We are forming an Arts Committee of parents and teachers to research arts opportunities for PS 158. Goal: to set up a special arts enrichment program for each grade for next year – class trips, partnerships with museums, concert halls, dance companies, theaters, puppeteers, storytellers, etc. Initial brainstorming meeting; formulation of list of arts organizations, grants and ideas to explore; division of research and tasks; report-back meeting to cull our findings; presentation to Darryl Alhadeff (who is already supportive but needs our manpower!).     We do not know what we would do without you Rose. You help us with everything in the PA. We are truly blessed to have you as part of our school. Wishing you a happy and healthy birthday on the 12th of February!

    Open PA Meeting
    Our next Open PA meeting will be on Thursday, February 15 at 8:45 am in the large cafeteria. Come listen to Council Member Jessica Lappin speak about future changes in the Dept. of Education. Elections for the 2007 Nominating Committee will be held.

    Next Snack Sale
    2nd and 3rd Grade will be hosting on next Snack Sale on Thursday, February 15. Please provide at least 2 dozen snacks per child to be sold to the entire school. Each snack costs 50 cents. This is a great fundraiser to the school and the children look forward to buying treats.

    Winter Recess
    Remember school is out February 20-25.

    Friday, April 20 is coming up!

    Be sure to send in your $5 contribution to your class parents as soon as possible for the raffle baskets.

    Keep soliciting those donations! If you are traveling, going to a restaurant, movie theater, Broadway show, going to your doctor’s - remember to bring those forms. Be creative! Forms are available at the PA Office.

    We still need lots more donations of new items for the boutique and baskets. Think re-gifting!!

    Our annual Teachers vs. the 5th Grade Students Volleyball game took place on Friday, February 2. Fun was had by all. Thanks to all the 5th grade parents who helped. The teacher’s team was very strong this year and beat all 3 classes (but it was close). Thank you Mr. Moronta, Mr. Galett, Mr Woodard, Mr Fox, Ms. Caldwell, Ms. Kessler, Ms. Lao, Ms. Trager and Ms. Appell.

    Thank you to the 1st and 4th grade classes for all their snacks and to the volunteers. We made $711.00!! Next month snack sale is hosted on the 15th by the 2nd and 3rd grade.
    Thanks - 4th and 5th Grade Teachers! Thank you! The 4th grade had a blast skating at the Lasker Rink and the 5th graders performed and learned so much at the Apollo theatre.

    Recycling: Used Printer Cartridges & Cell Phones

    Please DONATE your used cell phones and empty laser/inkjet printer cartridges. You can drop them off in designated boxes outside the PA office or via your child's teacher. You will not only make money for our school but also help save the environment!!!

    Club 158

    New semester starts on January 22. Please come and enroll your children. The following classes are full/closed: Chess (Tuesday), Sportsmania (Tuesday), Choice Time (Wednesday), Cooking it up (Thursday) and Robotics (Friday), Sports (Monday and Tuesday).

    Change in program - "Fun with Math" - New teacher Andrew Levine will be teaching K-3rd grade fun math games that allow them to deepen their mathematical skills through everyday life. The class will create a mathematically rich environment through games and activities.


    Kids in the Game - Recess
    A pump for balls is needed to keep the sports equipment in shape (soccer/ball pump).

    Winter Concert!

    Mr. Cohen and his musicians are working hard preparing for the Holiday Concert on Wednesday, December 20 at 7 pm.

    Tickets are $5 and can be purchased in advance at the PA Office. Refreshments will be available to purchase during intermission. Everyone over the age of 13 must purchase a ticket.

    Winter Concert!

    THE P.S 158 WINTER CONCERT WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 20 AT 7 PM.


    The concert will include band and choral performances including parents and teachers.

    The Holiday Fair will take place on Monday, December 11 from 2:30 pm to 8 pm. Please spread the word to your friends and neighbors.     New Passport Requirements & Express Service

    New requirements have been issued by the Departments of State and Homeland Security. As of January 23, 2007, passports will be required for all U.S. citizens traveling to or from the United States via air, to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean (with the exception of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), and Bermuda. As of June 1, 2009, passports will be required for all U.S. citizens traveling to or from the United States via land and sea, as well as air, regardless of destination. This applies for children and adults.
    The Jamaica Tourist Board with the help of the US Postal Service will help you apply for a passport at the HOLIDAY FAIR. Passport Photos will be taken as well for a $15 fee. No credit cards.

    In order to take advantage of this service, you will be required to provide this following:
    · Proof of US - previous US Passport, birth certificate with a registrants’ raised seal, naturalization certificate, certificate of citizenship, current valid license, government ID or military ID
    · 2 Passport Photos
    · Fees - 97$ per adult and $82 per child

    Get a jump start on your holiday shopping. Stop in and browse the wonderful selections at the Scholastic Book Fair. There is something for everyone! The book fair will be open from 8:15 am to 3:15 pm Monday through Thursday. The Book Fair will be open during the November 16 Open PA Meeting and Parent Teacher Conference’s on Mon and Wed. Please remember that the book fair is also a great opportunity to help build our classroom libraries by purchasing books and donating them to your child’s classroom. Thank you, Terri Kravitz, Libby Jordan, and all the volunteers for coordinating this great fundraiser (also a big thanks to Naomi Cruz for great decorations and Grandma Rose for all her continuous help).     Check Mate!
    There is still time to register for the P.S. 158 Chess Tournament which will be held on Sunday, November 5. This is a great tournament for beginners. Pick up your form up at the PA Office.

    Parent/Teacher Conferences Coming Up!
    Parent teacher conferences will be held on Monday, November 13 (afternoon) and Wednesday, November 16 (evening). This is a great opportunity to meet with you child’s teacher to discuss how he/she is progressing in school. Be sure to return your parent/teacher conference request form!

    Open School Week
    Open School Week will be observed from Monday, November 13 until Friday, November 17. Look for the schedule for classroom visits in your child’s backpack.

    We are pleased to report that Ms. Darryl Alhadeff’s hip surgery went well and she is already up and walking and is on her way to a speedy recovery! We miss her and look forward to her return back to school soon.
    Ronald McDonald Charity Run!
    You should have received information in your child’s backpack about the Kid’s Charity Fun Run.

    Do you have special talents, services, products you would like to sell at our Holiday Fair? We are seeking vendors to participate. This will be a great way to raise funds for our school and do some fun holiday shopping! The event takes place on Monday, December 11.     Octoberfest Update:

    1. Advance Ticket Sales!
    Avoid the lines – buy your tickets in advance! Most games and activities at Oktoberfest cost 1 to 2 tickets (some are more). This year you can purchase tickets in advance for 50 cents each at the PA Office (books of $5,$10,$20).

    2. Supplies are Needed!
    Please bring donations to the PA Office by Friday, October 27. Check the list below for contributions for each grade.


    Pre-K and K: Plain (unfrosted) cupcakes
    1st Grade: Frosting and cupcake decorations (sprinkles, candy corns, M&Ms. etc.)
    2nd Grade: Regular soda cans
    3rd Grade: Juice boxes and other non-carbonated drinks
    4th Grade: Single-serving water bottles
    5th Grade: Diet soda cans

    We also need cakes for our Cake Walk (a lot like musical chairs)!! We don’t want to disappoint the children by running out of these items.

    3. Bake-Off
    We would love to taste your family secret recipes. Enter your home baked cookies, pies, confections and other goods. Prizes will be awarded to outstanding entries based on taste, presentation and originality.

    4. Lego Contest
    Create your unique art work no larger than 12X12 to be displayed at Oktoberfest. Prizes will be based on presentation and originality.

    5. Haunting for Volunteers!

    Ronald McDonald Charity Run!
    The Kid’s Charity Fun Run has been a successful and well-organized fundraiser in support of the New York City Ronald McDonald House, held annually since 1999. The Fun Run enables kids to feel confident about helping other kids while participating in an event which is fun for everyone.
    All proceeds will benefit the children who stay at the Ronald McDonald House while receiving cancer treatment.
    Our school is an active participant in this wonderful event. Kids ages 4-17 are invited to participate. The run will take place in Central Park on Saturday, November 4 starting at 12:45 pm. Registration fee is $30. Watch backpacks for more information.

    Drama Club Underway!
    Drama Club started with a great turnout! The group we are working with this year is ‘Working Actor for Hire’ and they have a real love for teaching and performing. The fee is $700 for students in grades 3 through 5 for the entire school year culminating with performances in June. If you need a registration form – please call or stop by the PA Office.
